Below is a graphic on Herd Immunity. Herd immunity happens when enough people are protected from a disease because they’ve been vaccinated or had the disease. Experts do not know how long immunity from COVID-19 lasts after having it, so vaccination is the best way for us to reach herd immunity. Herd immunity makes it hard for the disease to spread from person to person, and it even protects those who cannot be vaccinated, like babies, children or people who are allergic to the vaccine. Studies on herd immunity and COVID-19 are happening, and more information will be provided when its available.
HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO BE VACCINATED?
To have herd immunity and protect more people from COVID-19, a very high percentage of people need to be vaccinated. Our goal is to save lives by ensuring all South Carolinians who wish to be immunized against COVID-19 are vaccinated as quickly, equitably, and ethically as possible. However, it will take time to immunize the 70 to 80 percent of the population needed to reach herd immunity and stop COVID-19.
